How can small sites become popular? Netflix ups prices, Very British Problems and here's some help from Google...

Matt Cutts focused on a question many small businesses want the ins and outs to in the latest Webmaster video

How can smaller sites with superior content ever rank over sites with superior traffic? It's a vicious circle: A regional or national brick-and-mortar brand has higher traffic, leads to a higher rank, which leads to higher traffic, ad infinitum.

Can the small guys really outperform the larger guys? Matt says so, but of course in time. His staple tips are to keep focusing on a smaller niche or topic and ensure it's covered well. Once that's done, you can build it out and become authoritative and reputable in more areas.

Small sites have often become very big, doing a better job with user experience and giving something that adds more value.

Final words to remember - don’t stop trying to produce superior content, because overtime that’s one of the best ways to rank higher.

(Kind of) bad news for our pockets, but good news for House of Cards fans. On Tuesday it Netflix announced it’s plan to raise its prices for the first time in three years. Why? Well, it’s to back more popular programming like the hit “House of Cards.” Prices will be upped by $1 or $2 per month for new customers around July time.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said,

When we look at the shows and movies that we will be able to get if we have a bigger budget, it's exciting, Hastings told The Associated Press. We want to make the service better and better so more people will join.

It’s Twitter time and I’m surprised I haven’t mentioned this before, but the “So Very British” is a humourous account that I have been following and loving for quite some time now. If you didn’t think you were a typical Brit, then have a read and you’ll end up laughing at how familiar these problem tweets sound.

Google created this app and it’s summed up in it’s name “Helpouts”. It works through Hangouts, so if you have a specific problem then this app will connect you to experts over a live video anytime and anywhere. You can even schedule Helpouts for times that best suit you.

Here’s what a reviewer had to say

The Goog's at it again... Great spin on getting in touch with knowledgeable people in their respected fields in this day and age of technology. If you need quick or long term help on a specific area, give this a try.

See you all next week!
