How we estimate daily search volume

Here is the formula we use to estimate daily search volume for any given keyword:

Number of searches
for a keyword
in our database            Estimated total number of        Estimated daily
----------------------  x  daily searches on all search  =  volume of searches
Total number of            engines *                        for the keword
searches in our
database

So for a keyword that has been searched for 9,000 times in our database (over our sample for the last 160 days), this is the number of daily searches that we predict for that keyword:

-------------  x  474.1 million *  =  14,286 daily predicted searches
298.7 million

* Every day, on average, we collect about 1.9 million search terms from Dogpile.com and Metacrawler.com (accounts for 0.63% of searches across all engines). By combining these two figures, we estimate that the total daily searches across all engines is 474.1 million searches.
